February 1, 2013 – I sat down at my computer and threw a hail Mary email into the universe. I was stretched way beyond my comfort zone and anything short of absolute perfection was unacceptable. The possibility of failure was too high, and someone needed to tell me it was going to be alright.
my best friend the Beyoncé of the photography community just praying for an answer. Any answer.
Let’s be real, she didn’t know me. We had never met. We had never spoken. We had never engaged in any way, but she took time out of her day and replied to my plea for help. Her words were brief, but they were strong.
- Introduce yourself with a smile and act confident, even if you don’t feel it.
- Be real when you engage – raw emotion is better in the long run.
- Give everything you have and LEAVE YOUR HEART ON THE COURT.
Her email has stuck with me since. I was having an existential crisis and it was the message I needed. It’s the message I still need. In a world where busy-ness is glamorized and perfection is demanded, I needed permission to not have it all together.
I realized, it’s not about perfection, it’s not about having the answers, but it is about showing up, and learning every day. Trusting the process and learning to be okay with the journey.
It was another three years before I met Jasmine Star in person and her message has been consistent throughout the years. Get up. Show up. And BE YOU.
Whatever it is pushing you beyond your comfort zone, remember, you are enough.
I am enough.
If you need that reminder as much as I do, I got you, Boo. You keep doing you, showing up, putting in the work, and big things are going to happen.
